Sun Yat Sen lotus: a symbol of friendship that spans generations

maandag, 25 juni 2018

In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, as well as the 30th anniversary of the sister relationship between Zhongshan and Moriguchi, a special ceremony was held in Zhongshan on June 23rd.

After a century, a cutting from the so called “Sun Yat-sen Lotus” which was brought back to Zhongshan from Japan, burst into bloom in the hometown of Sun Yat-sen, the leading figure in the fight to end the feudal monarchy in China.

A century ago, Sun gave 4 lotus seeds to Tanaka Takashi to express his appreciation for his support for the revolution.

The one now returned to Zhongshan is from a lotus grown from one of these four seeds.

“This is the first time that I have visited Zhongshan,” said Yukako Tannai, Tanaka Takashi’s granddaughter. “My father would be very excited, if he could see the ‘Sun Sat-sen Louts’ in bloom back in Zhongshan.”

Inspired perhaps by this emblem of the friendship between Sun and his Japanese friends, Zhongshan has maintained good links with Japan and signed its first sister city agreement with Moriguchi in Osaka, Japan in 1988.

Over the past 30 years, Zhongshan and Moriguchi have organized a wide range of exchange programs encompassing various fields, such as politics, economy, culture and youth talent.

“The ‘Sun Yat-sen Lotus’ plays an important role in promoting people-to-people exchange between China and Japan,” said Han Zesheng, president of the Zhongshan Public Diplomacy Association. “We hope that exchange programs between the two cities will be strengthened in the future that the friendship between Zhongshan and Moriguchi will be passed on from generation to generation.”

Seeds and cuttings from the flourishing “Sun Yat-sen Lotus” have been presented to cities across China and Japan, gradually having become a symbol of friendship between the peoples of the two nations.
